Toyotomi Hideyoshi, one of Japan's three great medieval warlords, began construction of Osaka Castle in 1583. Since that time, the castle has been badly damaged and required several reconstructions. A major renovation by Osaka City between 1995 and 1997 transformed the structure so that it could be preserved as Osaka's traditional symbol. The main tower houses a museum and the surrounding grounds contain interesting architectural features, beautiful green space, sports facilities and more.
