The remains of Aoba Castle are located on top of Mt. Aoba, near downtown Sendai. The original castle was built in 1601 by the feudal lord, Masamune Date. The castle served the Date family until 1868 and was torn down after the Meiji Restoration. What was left of the original structure was destroyed during WWII. Today, the area is a park and includes a Shrine, several monuments and a botanical garden.
