After Kobe's port was opened to foreigners in 1868 and their businesses thrived, immigrants began building homes in the Kitano area. This 'foreigner village' is known as 'Ijinkan' and is now a popular tourist attraction. Designed by foreign architects and built by Japanese tradesmen, more than 20 homes are open to the public. Each building is unique and definitely worth a visit!
